About me

I am a long-time professional artist who specializes in large historic murals and very life-like portraits.

I like to make paintings that are more real than a photograph.  In other words, I try to emphasize what I find most appealing about a subject...maybe turn the light up, increase the shadows, change colors around, modify the composition, you name it. Anything to make the final result the best it can be!  My favorite thing to paint ( and by far the most challenging) is portraiture. It is really tough to get the sparkle in the eyes. The eyes are the most important...they have to look alive. You can see lots of my commissioned and personal artwork at Gallery Gaudet when you visit my home-page at www.ArtAffectsDesign.com .

On another note, in the past couple of years, I have branched off into aeronautical design to invent the Skyaak.  Skyaak is a unique Ring-Wing glider, that is fun to build and fly, but challenging to master!

Check it out at www.skyaak.blogspot.com

I live at the Resort Village of Manitou Beach in central Saskatchewan, Western Camada with my wife and doggie.

We have a 17 year-old daughter who is graduating this year from Victoria School of Performing Arts in Edmontion, Alberta.

We are SO proud of her!

Stay well,

Michael

P.S. I will post more pictures as often as I can.

Mostly portraits
When I paint a portrait, I try to capture the spirit of the model. The surface appearance is secondary. I have done hundreds of portraits over the years, so getting an accurate likeness is not that hard now. I try to dig much deeper to draw out the essence, so that it feels like the person is actually in the room with you. That is the real challenge for me.

Skyaak, My Flying Toy Invention
Skyaak is my favorite 'pet project'. It is a unique 'Ring-Wing' flying apparatus that I have created and manufactured on a small scale. This is a huge challenge...you cannot bluff a 'flying device'. Either it works, or it's a DUD! There is a lot of work and development yet to be done with this...that's what keeps me fascinated.

OWL-Series
Steve Lawton has me intrigued with the idea of showing a 'work-in-progress'. I have photographed lots of paintings throughout their gestation, and have decided to post this particular one. One day last spring, we were delighted to see that a miniature ( 7-8" tall!) 'Northern Saw-Whet' owl had established itself outside our big picture window. A rare sighting, and a famous symbol of GOOD LUCK, I just had to paint it.

HistoricMuralSeries
In 2000, I was commissioned to design and paint a Historic Mural that depicts a typical arrival of an old steam locomotive. The mural is 52 feet long and 12 feet high, painted on special panels that were installed on a frame on the host building. Last year, four of the panels started to show signs of material failure, so the committee asked me to re-paint them. I am doing this as we speak and I am posting the Work in Progress.

Angel Works...
I have always believed in angels...all my life. Every once in a while, I am moved to try to portray some kind of angel. I hope you like these angelic offerings. They were designed and painted to see if I could come a bit closer to knowing those angelic be-ings. And to invite them into my life. Who among us could not use a guardian angel? Do you believe in angels?

Murals of Nipawin, Inc. is very pleased with the wonderful job Michael did reproducing the
4 panels of the C.P.R. Station mural.   Michael did an outstanding job of replicating  his original
design and a fanastic job of matching up all the vibrant viivid colors of the original panels.

The "C.P.R. Station" mural is only one of Michaels murals we are honoured to have in Nipawin.
Michael also painted "the Magnet" (check out all our murals on Nipawin.com home page.)

Murals of Nipawin, Inc.  is very proud of our Historical murals series and we are extremely pleased
that Michael was up to the huge challenge of reproducing these panels.

Thanks to the wonderful technology of the computer age we were able to watch the mural
come to life with all the pictures on enips.

Thank you Michael, you are a talented artist!
